The practice of smuding is as old as time. Burning of natural substances has been used for cleansing, healing and spiritual purposes throughout history. Evidence of smudging dates back millennia; smudging can be seen as a Universal connection that runs through and connects all cultures, time frames, places and religions. The practice of burning herbs to produce smoke is used in cleansing or prayer ceremonies and purification or healing rituals. A cleansing ritual using smudging often precedes healing sessions. It is believed that the smoke disperses impurities, which begins the healing process. Many of the herbs traditionally used for smudging have antiseptic qualities that purify the air. Through this purification many traditions believe negative thoughts and emotions are lifted away with the smoke rising to the Spirit World. Smudging, done correctly, can bring physical, spiritual and emotional balance.
