Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a viral disease of cats caused by certain strains of feline coronavirus. Cats infected with feline coronavirus generally do not show symptoms during the initial infection. In a small percent of infected cats (5 to 10 percent) the infection progresses into FIP. The virus is then referred to as feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV). With the assistance of the antibodies that are supposed to protect the cat, white blood cells are infected with virus, and these cells then transport the virus throughout the cat's body. An intense inflammatory reaction occurs around vessels in the tissues where these infected cells locate, often in the abdomen, kidney, or brain. It is this interaction between the body's own immune system and the virus that is responsible for the disease.

Any cat that carries any coronavirus is potentially at risk for developing FIP. Cats with weak immune systems are most likely to develop the disease, including kittens, cats already infected with feline leukemia virus (FeLV), and geriatric cats. Most cats that develop FIP are under two years of age, but cats of any age may develop the disease.

FIP is not a highly contagious disease, since by the time the cat develops FIP only a small amount of virus is being shed. Feline coronavirus can be found in large quantities in the saliva and feces of cats during the acute infection, and to a lesser extent in recovered or carrier cats, so it can be transmitted through cat-to-cat contact and exposure to feces. The virus can also live in the environment for several weeks. The most common transmission of feline coronavirus occurs when an infected female cat passes the virus to their kittens, usually when the kittens are between five and eight weeks of age.

FIP is relatively uncommon in the general cat population. However, the disease rate is much higher in multiple-cat populations, such as some shelters and catteries.

**Suggested Use for larger animals such as horses, elephants, giraffes, etc.: For pets over 251 lbs, add 5 drops for every additional 100 lbs of body weight.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF FIP?
Cats that have been initially exposed to the feline coronavirus usually show no obvious symptoms. Some cats may show mild upper respiratory symptoms such as sneezing, watery eyes, and nasal discharge. Other cats may experience a mild intestinal disease and show symptoms such as diarrhea. Only a small percentage of cats that are exposed to the feline coronavirus develop FIP-and this can occur weeks, months, or even years after initial exposure.

In cats that develop FIP, the symptoms can appear to be sudden since cats have tend to mask disease until they are in a crisis state. Once symptoms develop, often there is increasing severity over the course of several weeks. The first nonspecific symptoms can be loss of appetite, weight loss, depression, rough hair coat, and fever.

There are two major forms of FIP, the "wet" form or the "dry" form. Generally, cats will exhibit the signs of the dry form of FIP more slowly than the wet form.

Symptoms of Effusive (Wet) FIP:

• The hallmark of lethal effusive FIP is the accumulation of fluid inside the abdomen and/or chest cavity. Some animals take on a "pot-bellied" appearance. Excessive fluid buildup compresses the lungs and backs up into the airways, making it difficult for the cat to breathe. The lining of the affected cavity, along with the liver and spleen, becomes coated with white, fibrinous matter. Some lymph nodes may be enlarged.

• Gastrointestinal and eye ulcers
• Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes)
• Mild anemia
• Neurological abnormalities
• Severe conjunctivitis

Symptoms of Noneffusive (Dry) FIP:

• Noneffusive FIP usually develops slowly, with little fluid accumulation. Weight loss, depression, anemia, and fever are common. In young cats, growth may be stunted.

• Increased water consumption and urination (kidneys)
• Jaundice (liver)
• Vomiting and/or diarrhea (pancreas)
• Ocular inflammation, conjunctivitis, and blindness (eyes)
• Brain inflammation, paralysis in the hind legs, weakness, shaking, vertigo, seizures, and personality changes (central nervous system)

FIP can be difficult to diagnose because each cat can display different symptoms that are similar to those of many other diseases.

SUGGESTIONS WHEN TREATING MORE THAN ONE PET:

AMBER GLASS BOTTLES & SYRINGES ~ If you have more than one pet that you are treating, you might want to consider purchasing one or more amber glass 1/2 oz., 1 oz., or 4 oz. dropper bottles, so you can split up the tincture into a smaller bottle. That way there is less chance of product contamination.

In addition, when treating more than one pet, it may be necessary to assure sterile administration without carry over from pet to pet. This is very important when using Paxxin to treat some pups and using as a preventative for others. The best way to assure this is to use the dropper only to transfer product to an individual sterile oral syringe, using a different syringe for each pet. (This method will also reduce the chances of product contamination.) Those syringes should be sterilized after each use. Each pet should have its own syringe that is not shared with another pet.

The use of a syringe containing measured drops from the dropper will also remove the risk of the animal biting the glass dropper.

SYRINGES ~ these are luer slip syringes without needles that are excellent for administering measured amounts of Parvaid, CS, tinctures, etc. Reinforced tip, large finger grips, smooth draw and easy-to-read graduations. Rubber plunger with double contact for a positive seal and effortless injection. FDA approved and autoclavable.

If purchasing for use with Paxxin (aka Parvaid), syringe size needed is based on the weight of the puppy. We suggest two syringes, one for oral doses and one for enema doses (if not being given Sub Q fluids or on IV's, enemas are or may be necessary to prevent dehydration). Make sure to mark the enema syringe clearly, as you never want to accidentally use an enema syringe for an oral dose, even after it's been washed, as you can reinfect a puppy with parvo.

Puppies/kittens weighing under 3 pounds need 5 to 6 ml syringes. Animals weighing 3-10 pounds need 12 ml syringes. Puppies weighing 11-20 pounds need 20 ml syringes. Puppies weighing 21-40 pounds need 50 ml syringes. Puppies 41-50 pounds need 60 ml syringes.
